The Edale Skyline Walk from Hope (Peak District Classic)
If you’re looking for a proper challenge with some of the best views in the Peak District, the Edale Skyline is hard to beat.
We started this one from the village of Hope, which adds a bit more distance but makes for a great full-day loop. Straight out the gate, you’re into it… no easing in here.
The Climb Up Lose Hill
The first test is the climb up Lose Hill.
It’s a steady but relentless incline that gets the legs working early. Definitely a “wake you up” kind of start, but once you turn around and look back over Hope Valley, you realise it’s already worth it.
This is where the day really begins.
Along the Great Ridge
From Lose Hill, you follow the well-known Great Ridge over to Back Tor and then onto Mam Tor.
This section is one of the best ridge walks in the UK. Clear paths, big views on both sides, and that feeling of being properly up high without anything too technical.
Mam Tor is usually the busiest point, but for good reason. The views across Edale and the surrounding hills are unreal.
Pushing On to Hollins Cross and Beyond
Dropping slightly to Hollins Cross gives you a short breather before pushing on.
From here, the walk starts to feel bigger. You leave the busier ridge behind and head deeper into the skyline route.
Brown Knoll, Kinder Low & Kinder Scout
Next up is Brown Knoll, which can be a bit boggy depending on conditions, followed by the climb towards Kinder Low.
From there, you’re onto Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District.
This section feels more remote. The terrain changes, the paths can be rougher, and you definitely feel like you’ve earned your place up there.
The Final Stretch
After Kinder Scout, the route loops back around towards the valley, gradually bringing you back down after a long day on the hills.
By this point, the legs are feeling it, but the hard work is mostly done. It becomes more about soaking it all in and finishing strong.
Why This Walk Stands Out
This isn’t just a walk, it’s a full-day hike that ticks every box:
- Big climbs
- Iconic peaks
- Ridge walking
- Wide open views
- A real sense of achievement
It’s one of those routes that reminds you why you get out in the first place.
Family Friendly?
Honest answer, this one’s not for younger kids.
- Long distance
- Sustained climbs
- Mixed terrain
For older kids or experienced walkers, it could be a great challenge. But for most families, this is more of an adult hike.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Parking available in Hope
- Take plenty of water and snacks
- Expect changing weather conditions
- Good footwear is essential (especially around Brown Knoll)
- Navigation can be tricky in poor visibility
- Plan a GPS Route and follow via smartwatch/phone
Final Thoughts
This is one of those walks that sticks with you.
Tough in places, but never boring. Every section offers something different, and by the end, you feel like you’ve properly covered some ground.
Starting from Hope just adds to it. It turns a classic route into a full, rewarding day out in the Peak District.
